Richard Lowell was born in July 1926 in Mattawamkeag, Maine. Raised by his grandparents, Bruce and Nellie Stewart, in a home without electricity or running water, the family’s food came almost entirely from hunting and a vegetable garden.

When the Draft age was lowered from 21 to 18 in 1942, Warren “Jake” Enos was a junior in high school.  By March 1943, Jake received his Draft notice. He attended basic training at Camp Croft in South Carolina and then moved onto Camp Patrick Henry in Virginia.

Frederic (Owen) Wight was born in Newry, Maine, in April of 1932.  He attended Gould Academy in Bethel graduating in 1950. In 1954, Owen enlisted into the U.S. Army and served first at Fort Benning, Georgia, and then later at Fort Dix, New Jersey, where he was assigned to the motor pool and worked as a mechanic.

Joseph Henry Ennis was born in March 1923, and raised by his loving grandparents in Bellefonte, Delaware.  At the young age of 19, Joseph left home and enlisted in the Army Air Corps.  The year was 1942 and the war effort was really ramping up.

Fanny Breton was born in April 1926, in Calion, Arkansas. She was the fourth of five children: Oliver, John, Mertal, Fanny and Mary-Ann. Her father, Bryant, worked in the oil fields in the small town they lived in.

Donald Russell | MVH Bangor Veteran of the Month | Air Force
March 22, 2018

Donald Russell was born in Orland, Maine, on the Fourth of July 1932. He grew up in Bucksport and enlisted in the Air Force at age 17, and, following basic, trained for service as an aircraft mechanic.
