Understanding Long-Term Care Benefits for Veterans

Most veterans know the basic benefits they gain through veteran healthcare, the GI Bill and other sources.

However, many veterans are missing out on additional care benefits as they age.

Gaining Additional Income to Pay for Skilled Nursing Care

Veterans may gain stipends through the Veterans Affairs’ Aid and Attendance Program to help pay a portion of the costs of residence in a state Veterans’ home, such as Maine Veterans’ Homes.

Eligibility for veteran long-term care services, provided in a long-term care setting, are determined based on a variety of factors, such as need for treatment, personal care and assistance, service-connected status, insurance coverage, ability to pay, etc.

Gaining veteran health care benefits from the VA are separate from gaining eligibility for services at Maine Veterans’ Homes.

  • At Maine Veterans’ Homes, we are an independent, nonprofit organization separate from the VA.
  • There is a daily VA stipend available to qualifying residents, and we can bill through Medicare, Medicaid and private insurance for services provided.
  • To gain the VA stipend for our services, you must be deemed eligible for Maine Veterans’ Homes.

VA Benefits

  • As a veteran of the U.S. Armed Forces, you may qualify for VA benefits for long-term care, extended care, short-term stays and rehabilitation care.
  • There are certain eligibility criteria involving service, level of care or assistance needed, income, insurance and other factors.
  • Your VA benefits are determined through the Maine Bureau of Veterans’ Services. Find the nearest Veterans Services Office.

Where do I start?

Locate the veteran DD Form 214. The DD Form 214 verifies active duty, release from duty, assignment, rank and other information critical to getting military benefits.

If you don’t have a copy of the DD Form 214, don’t wait to begin the process to request a copy. A large amount of military records were destroyed in a 1973 fire but the needed information can be reconstructed by contacting the appropriate agencies.

What If I Was Previously Denied Long-Term Medical Care Benefits?

Don’t assume that determination is correct. At Maine Veterans’ Homes, we have seen benefits denied incorrectly due to wrong information provided to the veteran or family, incomplete paperwork and instructional errors.

All of these, and other situations, can be resolved to gain the benefits rightly deserved as a veteran of the U.S. Armed Forces.
