Frequently Asked Questions About Eligibility 

Who is eligible to live at Maine Veterans’ Homes?

Honorably discharged Veterans who were residents of Maine at their time of entry into the U.S. Armed Forces or veterans who are currently residents of Maine (at the time of their application) are eligible for admission to Maine Veterans’ Homes. Spouses, widows, widowers, and Gold Star parents of eligible.  Veterans may also qualify for residence at Maine Veterans’ Homes.

Veterans always take priority, and by federal law, no more than 25 percent of a Home’s residents may be non-veterans. There is no requirement for the Veteran to have served in combat or have a service-connected disability to be eligible for admission.

If I did not serve during wartime, am I eligible for admission?

Yes. Even if you never served in a war (or during wartime), you may still be eligible for admission at Maine Veterans’ Homes.

Are Merchant Marine and National Guard service members eligible for admission at MVH?

Yes. Merchant Marines who have military service documentation such as a DD-214 may be eligible.
for admission at Maine Veterans’ Homes. Those who have served in the National Guard may also be eligible for admission. Please contact an Admissions Team Member to determine your eligibility.

Can my spouse move with me?

Yes. Spouses of eligible Veterans are also eligible for admission to Maine Veterans’ Homes.  Spouses must qualify for a nursing home or assisted living level of care to be considered for admission.  Veterans always take priority, and by federal law, no more than 25 percent of a home’s residents may be non-veterans.

What if I cannot find my DD-214?

As Veteran advocates, we have experience working with state and federal agencies to help you get the paperwork you need for your application. If you intend to apply and don’t have your DD-214, please let us know and we will assist with this process.
